First-Ever Miss Nigeria, Grace Atinuke Oyelude, Who was crowned in the year, 1957 after defeating over 200 contestants in the pageant, has turned 90.
The story of how Grace became the first Miss Nigeria has always been an inspiration to so many youths even in her old age.
According to the report, Grace revealed that she became Miss Nigeria by accident and also with the help of her brother who is a broadcaster. Narrating how the event of her auditioning for the competition came up, she said her brother saw the advert for the pageant in the papers and included her for the competition without her knowledge even though she was still living in Kano.
She participated and won the pageant, which came with 200 Pounds (£200), and a ticket to London for two weeks, months after gaining admission to the School of Nursing in Ashford Kent, England.
In 1962, she qualified as a state registered midwife SCM after enrolling at the School of Midwifery, St Thomas Hospital, London. She also attended the Royal College Of Nursing, England in 1971 and obtained a Diploma in Nursing and Hospital Administration. In addition to that, she also obtained another Diploma from the Ghana Institute of Management and Personnel Administration.
Undoubtedly, Grace is a blessing to Nigeria and Africa at large. And how her brother contributed to her success and fame can never be forgotten. She was advised by her brother to participate in the competition, and nicely, she didn’t turn down the advice that has led her to greatness.
