Embracing Age: Lyn Slater Challenges Fashion Stereotypes

, a fashion influencer, challenges traditional notions of aging and style in her empowering memoir, “How to Be Old: Lessons in Living Boldly from the Accidental Icon.” In a recent endeavor, Slater collaborated with Parsons Fashion Design and Society MFA students to redefine fashion for seniors.

When approached by the students to be their muse, Slater recognized an opportunity to shift perceptions of aging in fashion. Rather than focusing solely on functional clothing, Slater encouraged the students to explore the aesthetic of age, infusing high fashion into the concept of old age.

Through discussions about the fluid experience of aging and the memories attached to clothing, Slater and the students embarked on a creative journey. Slater shared pieces from her wardrobe that held sentimental value, sparking conversations about the significance of clothing throughout different stages of life.

Together, they challenged stereotypes about aging bodies, creating garments that celebrated sensuality and individuality. The resulting designs were modern, intricate, and rebellious, reflecting the spirit of Slater and challenging preconceived notions about aging.  Intergenerational collaboration and deep listening. By reimagining fashion for seniors, they opened doors to new perspectives on aging and identity.

Slater’s memoir and her collaboration with the Parsons students serve as a reminder of the importance of embracing age with confidence and creativity. As she continues to inspire others to live boldly at any age, Slater’s work encourages us to challenge societal norms and celebrate individuality.
