A tragic incident occurred on Sunday when a reckless driver of a commercial Volkswagen bus, commonly known as a ‘Danfo,’ collided with a moving commercial motorcycle at Bolade Intersection along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos. Prompt response from the operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) helped restore normalcy on the road. Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, the Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, confirmed that the passenger succumbed to injuries immediately, while the trapped motorcycle rider was successfully rescued.
Preliminary investigations indicated that a notorious driver of a commercial Volkswagen bus, speeding and having disregarded a traffic light, collided with a moving commercial motorcycle carrying passengers at the Bolade intersection en route to Oshodi.
LASTMA’s Durojaiye Musefiu ‘Bravo’ (Zone 20 P. W. D.), conducting traffic monitoring patrol around the Oshodi axis, explained that the accident might have been prevented if the reckless driver had adhered to the traffic light regulating vehicular movements at Bolade Intersection. He further disclosed that, tragically, the male passenger on the commercial motorcycle lost his life instantly, while the trapped rider was rescued from under the commercial bus with severe injuries.
Durojaiye reported that LASAMBUS personnel handled the removal of the deceased passenger’s body and the rescued rider, while the driver of the commercial bus was handed over to the police at Akinpelu Police Division.
During a visit to the accident scene, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, cautioned commercial bus drivers against overspeeding and emphasized the importance of obeying traffic regulations throughout the state. Additionally, he appealed to motorcycle operators to refrain from using bridges, highways, and restricted routes across the state.
