Following an initial unsuccessful intervention for John Galliano, Dior’s then-CEO staged a more serious one in February 2011, just before Galliano was to present his final collection for Dior at Paris Fashion Week. Summoned by Bernard Arnault, the chairman of LVMH, Galliano was warned about the consequences of his binge drinking. However, his downfall, though predating contemporary “cancel culture,” has become a subject of interest for filmmaker Kevin Macdonald, who directed the documentary “High & Low: John Galliano.” The film explores Galliano’s rise and fall, delving into his creative genius and personal struggles.
Through interviews and archival footage, “High & Low” presents a nuanced view of Galliano’s career, highlighting his addiction to ambition and the toll it took on his mental health. Despite his controversial behavior, Galliano sought redemption through reconciliation efforts with Jewish individuals, ultimately finding acceptance in the fashion industry once again.
His return to prominence came with his Spring-Summer 2024 Haute Couture collection for Maison Margiela, showcasing his iconic aesthetic and marking a cultural resurgence. While the documentary offers insight into Galliano’s journey, it leaves room for viewers to form their own opinions about the designer and his actions.
