Don’t jump to conclusions on allegations against Betta Edu, APC governors urge Nigerians

The Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) has advised Nigerians to refrain from making premature judgments regarding corruption allegations against the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Betta Edu.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, who serves as the chairperson of the PGF, spoke to the press in Abuja on Thursday following a forum meeting. Uzodinma, representing the forum, urged the public to withhold judgment until the ongoing investigations are completed.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Uzodinma emphasized that the government’s responsibility involves promoting positive actions and commendable appointees while discouraging negative behavior and unsuitable appointees. He stressed that the case against Ms. Edu is currently an allegation, and the president has initiated an investigation. The final decision will be made based on the completed investigation report.

President Bola Tinubu suspended Ms. Edu on Monday after details of questionable financial contracts and approved payments surfaced. One notable instance is a leaked memo revealing her approval of a N585 million social intervention fund payment into a civil servant’s private account.

In response to the allegations, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) launched a probe as directed by the president, subjecting Ms. Edu to extensive questioning on Tuesday.

Governor Uzodinma urged Nigerians to exercise patience and avoid reaching conclusions until the investigations are concluded. He also reassured the implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s policies at the grassroots level and emphasized the commitment of the governors to ensuring national security and the well-being of Nigerians. Regarding the upcoming off-season elections in Ondo and Edo states scheduled for November, Uzodinma affirmed the APC’s readiness to participate in any election whenever it occurs.
